Targets depend on your heart risk. People at high risk, or who have had heart disease, usually need lower LDL than those at low risk; your doctor will set the goal.
Does the direct method differ much from the calculated one?
For most people they agree closely. Differences appear mainly when triglycerides are very high or lipid values are unusual.
