What this test is
The test measures conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin together. Raised levels turn skin and the whites of the eyes yellow and help show whether the problem lies before or after the liver.

Bilirubin is the yellow pigment produced when red blood cells break down and cleared by the liver. Testing total bilirubin helps explain jaundice and liver, bile duct or blood disorders.

What causes jaundice?
An elevated bilirubin level, which may come from increased red cell breakdown, reduced liver clearance or bile duct blockage. Doctors order further tests to separate these causes.
Is a mildly raised bilirubin concerning?
Some people have a harmless inherited pattern (Gilbert syndrome). A doctor should confirm it and arrange follow-up.
