What this test is
The test measures CA 19-9 in blood, a protein that can rise in pancreatic, bile duct and stomach cancers, and also in non-cancerous conditions such as cholangitis, cirrhosis, cholecystitis and poorly controlled diabetes.

CA 19-9 is mainly used to monitor pancreatic and biliary tract cancers. Raised values must be interpreted with imaging and clinical symptoms.

Does a high CA 19-9 mean pancreatic cancer?
Not always. Cholangitis and liver disease also raise it. Doctors interpret it with CT or MRI and your symptoms.
Who should have CA 19-9 tested?
Mainly patients already diagnosed with or being treated for cancer. It is not recommended for screening symptom-free people.
