What this test is
The test measures carcinoembryonic antigen in blood, which can rise in several cancers and in non-cancerous conditions such as smoking, hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease and some lung diseases, so a doctor interprets it.

CEA is mainly used to follow up treatment of colorectal cancer. It is not recommended as a stand-alone cancer screening test.
